About Chiropractic Care for Back Pain
Nearly 85% of people see a doctor because of low back pain at some point in their lives. While most doctors recommend rest, stretches and exercise, heat, over-the-counter pain relievers, and time, some may also suggest trying chiropractic, an approach that involves manual manipulation of the spine or other joints to improve mobility, relax muscles, reduce pressure on nerves, and encourage the body’s natural healing process.
The most Chiropractic Care chiropractic treatment is a technique called spinal manipulation, or adjustment. In this hands-on treatment, a chiropractor moves a joint beyond its normal range of motion and then applies a quick thrust to reset the alignment. During the procedure, you may hear a popping sound. This is a normal result of gases, like oxygen and carbon dioxide, releasing from the joint during treatment.
Chiropractic Care for Back Pain: What Patients Should Know
Some studies show that spinal manipulation, by itself or in combination with other treatments, improves back pain, but others have found no evidence of its effectiveness. In one recent study, patients receiving chiropractic care reported fewer days with pain and better functioning than those who did not receive chiropractic.
More research is needed to compare the effectiveness of different types of chiropractic treatments, including spinal manipulation and other soft-tissue techniques. But in general, the best way to get relief from back pain is to try a variety of conservative treatment approaches, and to work with your healthcare provider to develop an effective plan for you.
